2002-Mercedes-Benz-M-Class-recall

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 136,000 2000-through-2002 M-class SUVS and 2000-through-2004 M-class AMG SUVs because the cruise control doesn’t immediately disengage when drivers touch the brake pedal.

Drivers of affected Mercedes-Benz sport/utility vehicles may find their vehicle requires unusually high braking force to turn off the cruise control while driving. (Cruise control systems are designed to shut off the moment the driver uses either the brake or gas pedal.)

If the driver pumps the brakes, the cruise control system may also fail to disengage, according to a letter Mercedes-Benz sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on March 31.

Drivers should note that the cruise control can still be shut off by using the steering column-mounted stalk that controls the systems.

The recall, identified under campaign #11V208000, is expected to begin in September. Mercedes will instruct affected owners to bring their vehicles to the local dealership for free repairs. M-class owners can also call Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
